@Shop, Launched By Instagram, Is Your New Shopping Buddy

On Thursday, 9 May, Facebook-owned Instagram pulled off another of its magic tricks by announcing the @shop account, which is a platform for budding businesses to showcase their products, ranging from home decor, fashion and beauty.

As quoted by the editorial team of Instagram “@shop is a celebration of small businesses and the creators behind them. The content on this account is inspired by our community of shoppers — you. @shop is a real-time reflection of our community’s interests across top shopping categories like fashion, beauty, home decor and more.”

By this move, the image-sharing giant seems to have joined the foray of commercializing the social media space by bringing e-commerce into the picture. Earlier, in March, it had opened its doors to ad sales by introducing the @checkout with Instagram option that enabled users to purchase products without leaving the app.

How it works?

Not all products get featured in the new account. The @shop feature collates all shopping posts from online vendors and publishes ONLY the most trending and community-driven items in its new account. The account doesn’t do paid advertising for products.

Each product has a back-story shared by the founders that provide insight into how the product came into existence and quotes from the owners. Added to the post are shopping tags that let Instagram users know more about the product and make a direct purchase without getting redirected to any other site. This enables for a breezy shopping experience.

Until now, the account has featured some high-end U.S. brands such as Glossier Play, Feel Jeans, Sold Out NYC, Mented Cosmetics, The Lip Bar, etc.

It had already amassed a huge number of followers, approximately 16,000, within hours of its launch.

After @Instagram and @checkout, this is the 3rd account published by Instagram.

The new @shop account provides users with a feel of shopping in a digital mall. What makes it better is that it offers customized products based on your recent searches, and helps you navigate through hundreds of products like a breeze. And with the new tap to shop feature, life just got easier. And we’re not complaining! It’s a thumbs-up from us!
